ATLANTA (April 6, 2024) – The Canada Women’s National Team defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout in the second semifinal at the 2024 SheBelieves Cup, presented by Visa. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation before the match went straight to penalties. Brazil was on the front foot for much of the afternoon and took the lead on a penalty kick from Tarciane in the 22nd minute, but Canada battled back and equalized on a set piece header from Vanessa Gilles in the 77th.

Canada will square off against the U.S. Women’s National Team on Tuesday, April 9 (7 p.m. ET; TBS, Universo, Max, Peacock) at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio in the SheBelieves Cup Final. The U.S. is aiming for its fifth consecutive and seventh overall tournament title while Canada is seeking its first in three appearances at the competition, launched in 2016 and now playing its ninth edition. Canada will take on Japan in the Third-Place Match at 4 p.m. ET.

Brazil created more danger throughout the afternoon, outpossessing and outshooting Canada 16-12. After a good look in the game’s opening minutes on a free kick into the box that Tarciane wasn’t able to finish, the opening goal came midway through the first half. A Canadian foul in the box led referee Tori Penso to point to the penalty spot and Tarciane rocketed her attempt to the back of the net to put Brazil up 1-0.

Canada pushed hard for an equalizer after the break and the North Americans finally broke through on a set piece in the 77th. Taking a free kick from just outside the box, Jessie Fleming served a ball for Gilles at the middle of the six. There, the center back rose above the Brazilian defensive line and goalkeeper Tai Borges as she came off her line to head the ball home to the middle of the net.

While both teams failed to convert their first penalty, Canada found its rhythm and scored its ensuing four attempts. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan saved Marta’s opening penalty kick for Brazil and a miss from Antonia gave the Canadians the edge as Julia Grosso netted the game-winner.
