USWNT Rewind: Sam Coffey Finds the Net, Ally Sentnor Debuts for Kansas City Current

Coffey scored the second goal of the NWSL season, tying her career high

The NWSL season rolls on as Matchday 15 is in the books. More than halfway through the 2025 regular season, the race to the playoffs heats up. U.S. Women’s National Team players were, as always, right in the thick of it.

Meanwhile, the European leagues are set to begin later this fall, with club friendlies already kicking off.

Let’s rewind some of the USWNT's top moments at their respective clubs from this weekend:

Sam Coffey Scores in Cascadia Rivalry

The rivalry between the Portland Thorns and Seattle Reign FC is one of the strongest in the NWSL. USWNT defensive midfielder Sam Coffey got in on the action, scoring one of four goals for the Thorns in the victory.

In the 18th minute, Coffey stepped up to take a penalty kick and smashed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to equalize after Seattle scored early in the match. The Thorns would score three more times before the final whistle to finish with a 4-2 scoreline at full time.

It was Coffey’s second goal of the season, and the fifth of her career. Her goal Sunday tied a career season-high after she netted two last season as well. Coffey, known as a stabilizer in the midfield, has also found the net in a National Team shirt. She scored three goals in the USWNT’s last five outings.

Ally Sentnor Debut for Kansas City

After a record-breaking trade that transferred Ally Sentnor to Kansas City Current from the Utah Royals last week, the USWNT forward made her debut in teal at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

Sentnor subbed on in the 46th minute in the Current’s 1-0 victory over her former squad, the Royals. The second-year player jumped from the last-ranked team in the NWSL to the top of the league in Kansas City. Sentnor adds even more firepower to a first-place Current side that includes fellow USWNT players Michelle Cooper, Claire Hutton and Lo’eau LaBonta and holds the best record, by far, in the league with 13 wins and 39 points in the table.

Yazmeen Ryan and a Dramatic Ending in Houston

The Houston Dash escaped with a narrow 2-1 win over the North Carolina Courage with a game-winning goal in stoppage time.

USWNT forward Yazmeen Ryan may not have been credited with the assist, but her tenacious attack certainly opened the door for Sophie Schmidt to net the go-ahead goal. Ryan sized up a Courage defender on the right corner of the box and beat her 1v1 to launch the ball toward the goal. Schmidt cleaned up the rebound with a finish from close range.

The Dash improved to 4-8-3, 15 points, sitting 12th in the standings. While they’re four places out of playoff contention, it’s a tight race in spots No. 9 through 12. The Courage currently holds the ninth spot, so Houston’s win this weekend could prove crucial later.

European Upcoming Schedule

While the NWSL is in full action until November, the European clubs that the USWNT are a part of will kick off their seasons in September, with club friendlies already underway.

OL Lyonnes, which now has three Americans on the roster — Lindsey Heaps, Lily Yohannes and Korbin Albert — is one of those squads that played an exhibition game prior to the kickoff of the 2025-26 regular season. The Lyonnes beat Switzerland side Servette FCCF 5-0 over the weekend.

Women’s Super League begins Sept. 6

  • Naomi Girma, Catarina Macario (Chelsea)
  • Emily Fox, Jenna Nighswonger (Arsenal)
  • Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United)

Première Ligue Féminine begins Sept. 6

  • Lindsey Heaps, Lily Yohannes and Korbin Albert (OL Lyonnes)
  • Crystal Dunn (Paris Saint-Germain)
