Sonnett Lifts Trophy In SwedenEmily Sonnett Wins Damallsvenskan Title With Swedish Side Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC
The short stint in Sweden for U.S. Women’s National Team defender Emily Sonnett has resulted in a trophy as she helped Kopparbergs/Goteborg FC clinch the league title with a 7-0 win over Linkoping on Saturday. With a four-point lead in the standings and only one matchday remaining in the 2020 Damallsvenskan season, Goteborg secured its historic first league title, improving on runner-up results each of the previous two campaigns. Goteborg is unbeaten in its last eight league matches, allowing just one goal over that span.
Sonnett has appeared in nine league matches since joining the Swedish club in August, making eight starts. Sonnett is no stranger to club success, winning the NWSL Shield with Portland Thorns FC in 2016 and the NWSL Championship with the Thorns in 2017. During her previous experience abroad during the 2017-18 season, she helped Sydney FC to the championship game in Australia’s W-League. Sonnett was traded from Portland to the Orlando Pride prior to the start of the 2020 NWSL season but has yet to compete for the club due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Damallsvenskan -- the top-flight in Swedish women’s soccer -- has featured numerous Americans over the years, notably World Cup winners Christen Press, who won the Swedish Cup with Goteborg in 2012, Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris and Meghan Klingenberg.
