Debinha and Julia Score First-half Goals as Brazil Defeats Canada 2-0 to Finish 2021 Shebelieves Cup

Brazil Outshoots Canada 8-1 in First Half; Canada Outshoots Brazil 10-1 in Second

ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 24, 2021) – Brazil defeated Canada 2-0 in the final match for both teams at the 2021 SheBelieves Cup as Debhina and Julia scored first-half goals.

In a match that saw Brazil control play in the first half while Canada was the better side in the second, Brazil broke through in the 15th minute after Debinha picked off a pass deep inside Canada territory. She immediately played Adriana behind the defense on the left and the Brazilian midfielder raced into the penalty area toward the near post. She shot from a very sharp angle through the legs of sliding Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé and the ball hit the inside of the right post. It bounced back almost all the way to the left post where Debinha was first to the rebound and tapped it home from just a yard out in front of the scrambling Labbé and a Canada defender.

The goal was the second for Debinha at the SheBelieves Cup, good for the tournament lead. The forward stars for the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL.

Brazil made it 2-0 in the 39th minute as Canada failed to clear the ball out of its penalty box. Canada defender Gabby Carle tried to get it out twice, but Brazil blocked the first and then Julia took it off Carle’s foot the second time before smashing a shot from the right side of the penalty area across the goal and into the left corner past the diving Labbé. It was Julia’s second international goal for Brazil.

Brazil almost added a third just before halftime when Tamires pulled off a nasty nutmeg on Canada midfielder Jessie Fleming near the left sideline and then found Debhina, who in turn played a square pass to Adriana. She struck a dipping shot from 25 yards out that Labbé was able to push off the crossbar with a brilliant flying save.

Canada had just one shot before the break but picked up the pace in the second as both teams made multiple substitutions – five combined at halftime (Brazil stars Marta and Debinha came off) and six more combined during the second half – but neither team could find the net again and Brazil picked up the three points.

Canada’s best chance came in the 84th minute on a free kick from the left side. Forward Janine Beckie struck a driven ball that sliding defender Shelina Zadorsky did well to get a toe on, pushing it off the right post. The rebound bounced back to Zadorsky, and from a seated position after her first shot, she was able to fire another chance from five yards out, but that attempt was cleared off the line by a Brazilian defender.

Brazil finishes the tournament with a 2-1-0 record and six points while Canada went 1-2-0 with three points. The teams await their final tournament placement pending the result of the USA-Argentina match to follow.
