USMNT REWIND: Ricardo Pepi Continues Hot Streak With Goal for FC Dallas

Cristian Roldan heads to Austin with four goals in his last four matches
By: Michael Lewis

Gianluca Busio arrived to his first World Cup Qualifying camp on the back of a timely goal, scoring his first Serie A goal in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time to help Venezia secure a 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Friday.

With Venezia trailing late, the 19-year-old midfielder took a feed from Daan Heymans and fired a shot that deflected off defender Martin Caceres and into the net to become the youngest U.S. international to score in the Italy’s Serie A.

The goal comes two weeks after the Sporting Kansas City product registered his first Serie A assist in a 2-1 defeat to Spezia on Sept. 19.

With the result at Cagliari, Venezia (1-4-2, 5 points) moved one spot above the relegation zone into 17th place.

Back in MLS, Seattle Sounders FC scored six goals in two victories last week and Cristian Roldan had a hand in five of them, finishing the week with two goals and three assists.

He started his onslaught in the 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes Wednesday night with a goal and two assists. Roldan set up the first of two first-half goals by Raúl Ruidíaz in the 25th minute. He also connected for Seattle's third goal in the 49th minute. Jimmy Medranda sent a left-wing cross to a sliding Roldan, who tapped it in.

The 26-year-old midfielder topped himself in Sounders FC's 3-0 triumph over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday night with a goal and two assists. Only three minutes into the match, Will Bruin turned his interception into a pass to Roldan, whose shot from the edge of the box deflected off the hands of goalkeeper Clint Irwin for his fourth goal in as many matches across all competitions.

Roldan was content to be a playmaker for the next two goals. In the 24th minute, he crossed the ball to Joao Paulo, who set up Jimmy Medranda's goal for a two-goal advantage. Roldan then set up Joao Paulo's goal in first-half stoppage.

Roldan has five goals and as many assists for Seattle, which retained its MLS Western Conference lead (16-5-6, 54 points) over Sporting Kansas City (15-6-7, 52).

HELPING HANDS

A pair of Tims and a Brenden accrued assists overseas last week.

With Lille leading 1-0, Tim Weah came off the bench in the 72nd minute and set up Jonathan David's injury-time goal to confirm a 2-0 home victory against Olympique Marseille on Sunday.

It was the USMNT winger’s second assist in as many matches for the reigning Ligue 1 champs and came just days after Weah made his UEFA Champions League debut in a 2-1 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg.

Center back Tim Ream picked up a rare assist in a 3-1 win over Swansea City in the English Championship last Wednesday. His header set up the first goal of Aleksandar Mitrovic's first-half hat-trick. The veteran defender was originally part of the USMNT’s October World Cup Qualifying roster, but withdrew on Friday due to family reasons.

Brenden Aaronson, who has made headlines scoring goals, recorded his first assist of the Austrian Bundesliga season on Nicolas Capaldo's 12th-minute goal in RB Salzburg's 3-1 triumph over LASK on Sunday. Catching LASK out in transition, the speedy 20-year-old tracked down a ball and broke down the right flank before centering for Nicholas Capaldo who fired home from the top of the area.

FINDING THE NET

Headed back to his second USMNT camp, Ricardo Pepi tallied FC Dallas' lone goal, his 13th this season, in its 3-1 home defeat to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night. In the 68th minute, Ryan Hollingshead played a through ball to Pepi, who beat goalkeeper Tim Melia for the final goal of the match.

Joe Scally, Pepi’s teammate at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup, continued his strong run of form, scoring his first Bundesliga goal for Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. With ‘Gladbach leading Wolfsburg 2-1 in stoppage time, Scally headed a long ball by goalkeeper Yann Sommer toward the center line. He chased the ball down, ran toward the penalty area and find the right position to score the insurance goal in the fifth minute of added time.

Daryl Dike has rediscovered his scoring touch last week, striking in consecutive matches for Orlando City SC, giving goals in three successive games. In a 2-2 draw at Nashville SC on Sept. 29, Dike help the Lions sliced the hosts' lead in half in the 76th minute. Dike was fouled in the area for a penalty kick, which he took. He fired his shot to the left side. On Saturday, Dike pulled off a dramatic goal. Seven minutes into stoppage time, Chris Mueller sent an in-swinging corner kick from the left side. Dike headed it in for the game-winner and sixth goal of the season.
