USMNT REWIND: Morris, Roldan and Arriola Find Back of the Net in Major League Soccer

By: Michael Lewis

Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan proved to be a one-two punch that was too much for Sporting Kansas City in the Seattle Sounders' 3-0 win at Lumen Field on Saturday.

Both U.S. Men's National Team players recorded a goal and an assist as they played a part in each goal during the nationally televised MLS match on ABC.

Only eight minutes after kickoff, Roldan helped spark Seattle. Taking a pass from his brother Alex at the far post, he found Will Bruin, who headed the ball home past goalkeeper Tim Melia. Roldan has four assists this season.

Morris got on the scoresheet in the 71st minute, heading in Nouhou's left-wing cross for a 2-0 lead. The 27-year-old forward has four league goals and six across all competitions for Seattle this season.

Roldan and Morris teamed for the final goal in the 76th minute. Leo Chu sent the ball to Morris, who passed to Roldan, who finished into an open net to cap the empathic 3-0 win for Seattle.

CAREER BEST

A week after his five-game scoring streak was snapped, Paul Arriola hoped that he has started a new one in FC Dallas' 2-2 draw with Austin FC on Saturday, June 25. The 27-year-old winger has tallied a career-best eight goals in 15 games, one more than the seven he scored for D.C. United in 25 games in 2018.

Arriola struck in the 58th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, putting in a rebound off Paxton Pomykal's shot. Arriola has recorded seven of Dallas' last 10 goals and six of them have come in the second half.

SOME HELPING HANDS

Aaron Long picked up a rare assist on goal in the New York Red Bulls' 3-0 win over New York City FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday. He headed Tom Edwards' long free kick to Lewis Morgan, who slotted home a five-yard shot to grab a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.

The USMNT center back has three assists in his 124-game MLS career. Long, however, was unable to get an opportunity to duplicate that in New York's next game as he was forced to sit out the 2-0 loss at Los Angeles Football Club on Sunday due to COVID-19 protocols.

Eryk Williamson set up Jaroslaw Niezgoda's second of two goals for the Portland Timbers in their 3-0 home win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

The midfielder won the ball near the right touchline and dribbled into the box before chipping a cross towards the six-yard box. Making a run behind his defender, Niezgoda managed to slot the ball home in the 62nd minute.

Williamson has four assists in 10 games and 429 minutes this season, one shy of his career high (set in 2020).
