USMNT REWIND: Tillman, Ream, Cowell Score on Their Way to USMNT Camp

Matt Turner Registers First Premier League Clean Sheet; Drake Callender Continues Strong Run with Inter Miami
By: Michael Lewis

As U.S. Men's National Team players looked toward the international break, the unofficial theme of last week's action was firsts.

Malik Tillman scored his first goal for his new club. Cade Cowell tallied his first goal of the Major League Soccer season. Tim Ream recorded his first goal of the English Premier League campaign, and Matt Turner registered his first English Premier League shutout.

Drake Callender also came within minutes of securing two clean sheets within five days.

A number of U.S. pool players who weren't called into camp stood out as well. Brandon Vazquez and Jordan Morris found the net, and Jesús Ferreira assisted on a goal in his first MLS match in nearly three months.

The USMNT will host Uzbekistan on Sept. 9 in St. Louis and welcome Oman on Sept. 12 in St. Paul, Minn.

SPECTACULAR DEBUT

Malik Tillman certainly made quite an impression in his Dutch Eredivisie debut for PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, Sept. 2. Only 14 minutes after replacing Ismael Saibari in the 72nd minute, Tillman connected for his first Eredivisie goal and final goal of the match in a 4-0 win at RKC Waalwijk.

Forward Ricardo Pepi, who also came on in the 72nd minute, almost registerd himself, but his goal was nullified because he was offside. Defender Sergiño Dest, who started in both UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Rangers, was in the Starting XI again and played 84 minutes.

SNAPPING A STREAK

Forward Cade Cowell broke a personal 16-game MLS scoring drought with his first goal of the season for the San Jose Earthquakes. He found the net in the 16th minute of a 1-1 home tie with Minnesota United on Saturday, Sept. 2.

After the visitors failed to clear a corner kick, Cowell put in a bouncing shot into the near left post past keeper Dayne St. Clair. It was the 19-year-old's 10th league tally as he became the 11th player in league history to reach double digits in goals as a teenager.

IN A LOSING CAUSE

Tim Ream scored on his return from a one-game suspension, but the Fulham captain's presence could not help his team avoid a 5-1 defeat at Manchester City and the great Erling Haaland, who tallied a hat-trick on Saturday, Sept. 2.

In the 33rd minute, Andreas Pereira curled in a corner kick that was met by Raul Jimenez inside the City box. The Mexican forward attempted a first-time volley that goalkeeper Ederson stopped but Ream slotted in the rebound at the left post for his first  goal of the season.

MR. CLEAN SHEET

Matt Turner warmed up for camp by backstopping Nottingham Forest to an important 1-0 win at Chelsea, his first English Premier League clean sheet, on Saturday, Sept. 2. With the game on the line in the 88th minute, Turner knocked Thiago Silva's close-range shot at the left post out for a corner kick.

Forest (2-2-0, 6pts.) moved up to ninth place in the standings.

ALMOST A DOUBLE

Drake Callender came within minutes of securing two shutouts within a week.

On Wednesday, Aug. 30, the Inter Miami goalkeeper kept visiting Nashville SC off the board in a 0-0 draw. He made two saves.

On Sunday, Sept. 3 LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead headed in a corner kick in the 90th minute in Miami's 3-1 away triumph.

A PERFECT THREE

Christian Pulisic wasn’t able to find a goal in his third consecutive match, but he helped AC Milan register its third win in as many tries in Italy's Serie A with a 2-1 away triumph over Roma on Friday, Sept 1.

Second-place Milan (3-0-0, 9 pts.) trails archrival Inter Milan due to goal differential (plus six to plus nine).

Pulisic, who played 77 minutes, came close to putting the ball into the net in the 22nd minute, as he put Theo Hernandez's volley at the far-right post on target, only to be denied by a spectacular save by goalkeeper Rui Patrício.

CLUB DEBUT

Folarin Balogun, who was transferred from Arsenal to Monaco on Wednesday, Aug. 30, made his club debut, seeing 16 minutes as a substitute in 3-0 win over Lens on Saturday, Sept. 2. He replaced Wissam Ben Yedder in the 74th minute.

The 22-year-old striker is quite familiar with the league, having scored 21 goals in 37 league matches as a loan player with Reims last season.

CLINCHING A PLAYOFF SPOT

Brandon Vazquez tallied his fifth goal of the MLS campaign as visiting FC Cincinnati became the first team to clinch an MLS Cup Playoff spot as it edged Atlanta United, 2-1, on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The forward snapped a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute as he redirected Alvaro Barreal's low pass into the box past goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

DOUBLE DIGITS

For the fourth time in his eight-year MLS career, Jordan Morris hit double digits in goals in the Seattle Sounders' 2-1 victory at Austin FC on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Nico Lodeiro's free kick found Morris at the near post for a tap-in past Austin FC goalkeeper Brad Stuver, which broke a scoreless tie in the 49th minute. Morris scored a career-high 12 goals in his 2016 rookie season and has 63 career goals for the Sounders across all competitions, ranking him third in club history.

HELPING OUT

In his first MLS game for FC Dallas since June 11, Jesús Ferreira assisted on Paul Arriola's fourth-minute goal in a 2-2 home draw with Atlanta United on Saturday, Sept. 2. The goal gave Dallas a 1-0 lead.

Ferreira connected for a pair of hat-tricks in wins in Concacaf Gold Cup in July. He played in the MLS All-Star Game and started four matches for Dallas in the Leagues Cup (one goal, four assists).
