U-17 USWNT Falls 4-3 To Spain At Friendly Tournament In Sweden
Alexis Missimo, Simone Jackson and Allyson Sentnor Score, but Giovana Queiroz Costa Scores Hat Trick for Spain
FALKENBERG, Sweden (Sept. 14, 2019) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team fell to Spain, 4-3, in the second game of a friendly tournament in Sweden.
The USA opened the competition on Sept. 11 with a 2-1 victory over the hosts on goals from Amelia White and Trinity Byars and will face Germany to finish the tournament on Sept. 17. All the games are being played in and around Falkenberg on the southwest coast of Sweden about 60 miles south of Gothenburg.

The loss was the first of this cycle for the U-17 USWNT which dropped to 9-1-0 in international games this year. Germany defeated Sweden, 4-1, in the other match of the day.
Spain started quickly, scoring before 60 seconds had elapsed through Giovana Queiroz Costa – the first goal of her hat trick.
The USA responded well, scoring in the 4th minute as Alexis Missimo tied the game after Byars, her club teammate at Solar SC in Texas, played a through-ball behind the defense. Missimo finished from just inside the penalty area with her right foot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Simone Jackson gave the USA it’s only lead of the match in the 22nd minute when Alyson Sentnor played her a through-ball that she finished into the right side of the goal.
Spain then scored three consecutive goals, tallying in the 27th, 78th and 80th minutes to take the lead. Sentnor pulled a goal back in the 85th after running onto a pass from Lilly Reale and rounding the ‘keeper inside the box, but the Americans could not create a tying goal before time ran out.
U.S. head coach Tracey Kevins called up 20 players for this tournament. All players in the competition must have been born on or after January 1, 2003, which is the age cut-off date to be eligible for the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in India. Nineteen of Kevins’ call-ups were born in 2003 with Sentnor the only one born in 2004. Sentnor leads the team in goals this year with six. Missimo’ and Jackson both tallied their third goals of the year in international play.
In the round-robin competition, the teams get three points for a win and zero for a loss, but if a match is tied at the end of regulation, the teams take penalty kicks. In the case of the tie and then penalty kick shoot-out, the winning team will get three points and the losing team will get one point.
Sweden will host the 2020 UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship in May of next year.
