NATIONAL TEAM HIGHLIGHTs

  • A poised a consistent presence on defense, Girma earned her first call-up to the Senior National Team in October of 2020 but made her breakthrough in 2022, when she was called up again for January Camp and made her international debut on April 12, 2022, playing the full 90 minutes in a shutout victory over Uzbekistan.
  • Made four appearances – including two starts – at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, helping the USA qualify for both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
  • Played the full 90 minutes in both of the USA’s games against Germany to close out 2022 while also putting together strong performances against Nigeria and England earlier in the fall.
  • Girma played for the USA at the U-17, U-19 and U-20 levels as was a captain with the U-20s, captaining the side that won the Under-20 Concacaf Women’s Championship in 2020.
  • She finished her U-17 career with 16 caps and had 20 caps with the U-20s, while being named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year in 2020

  • She represented the USA at two FIFA Youth World Cups, every minute of all three games at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan and every minute of all three games at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France.

  • Selected No. 1 overall by San Diego Wave FC in the 2022 NWSL Draft.
  • Had a stellar 2022 NWSL season for San Diego Wave FC, winning both the NWSL Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year honors, the first player ever to sweep both in a single season.

  • Daughter Daughter of Girma Aweke and Seble Demissie, both of whom immigrated from Ethiopia in their teens.
