Five Things to Know: USWNT vs. Argentina
Here’s everything you need to know heading into the USWNT’s SheBelieves Cup match against Argentina on Sunday, March 1 in Nashville, Tenn.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2026 SheBelieves Cup, presented by Visa, kicks off this weekend at GEODIS Park as the U.S. Women’s National Team begins its quest for an eighth tournament title on Sunday, March 1 against Argentina.
Here are five things you should know ahead of this Concacaf-CONMEBOL matchup:
The USWNT opened its 2026 campaign in January in California where the team earned back-to-back shutout wins over Paraguay and Chile. Head coach Emma Hayes said January camp helped them dial down on key themes the team will focus on heading into World Cup qualification later this year.
“I think this camp has given us the reference points to be able to say, ‘Those are the things we need to add to go to the next level,’” Hayes said after the 5-0 win against Chile. “These are the things we are looking for, and for the players that come back in SheBelieves, it will be really clear what that looks like.”
Of the 26 players on the SheBelieves Cup roster, 14 competed in January, including Trinity Rodman and Emma Sears, who scored in both matches. Also returning from last month’s camp are young players Maddie Dahlien, Riley Jackson, Kennedy Wesley, Jameese Joseph and Claudia Dickey, who were all named to their first SheBelieves Cup roster.
The USA holds a 5W-0L-1D record in Nashville dating back to 2004 and it has won both of its matches held at GEODIS Park. Nashville has been a stop in three previous SheBelieves Cups, including the inaugural tournament in 2016. The Music City was also recently announced as one of the six cities that will host matches during the 2028 LA Olympics.
The USWNT has never lost the opening match of the SheBelieves Cup (8W-0L-2D). In opening SBC matches, the team averages 1.4 goals per game, has never scored more than two goals and has been shut out only once, in a scoreless draw against the Czech Republic in 2022. The other draw was a 2-2 result against Japan in 2019 when the Nadeshiko equalized in second-half stoppage time. Twelve different USWNT players have scored in the opening match, including Rose Lavelle, Jaedyn Shaw, Lindsey Heaps and Ally Sentnor, who were named to this year’s roster.
Sunday will be the seventh time the U.S. and Argentina meet with the USA having won all six previous matches. The most recent meeting was a 3-0 U.S. victory in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 30, 2024, when Naomi Girma scored her first two international goals. The two sides met in the 2021 SheBelieves Cup – the only other time Argentina competed in the tournament – and the USWNT won 6-0, the team’s biggest margin of victory and highest-scoring game ever at the SheBelieves Cup.
Lindsey Heaps, a consistent presence in the midfield and regular captain for the USWNT, made her USWNT debut in 2013 and has tallied at least one goal for the USA every year since 2015, the longest such streak by any player currently on the team. Should she score in this tournament or later in 2026, she would become the sixth player in USWNT history to score in at least 11 consecutive calendar years, joining Mia Hamm (15 from 1990—2004), Abby Wambach (14 from 2002—15), Carli Lloyd (12 from 2010—21), Tiffeny Milbrett (12 from 1992—2003) and Shannon Boxx (11 from 2003—13).
