Summary

A set of interactive team challenges from the Switch the Pitch program that uses soccer as a platform to explore anti-racism, identity, power, and social justice. The resources include coach training, on-field team challenges, and conversations that invite players and coaches to reflect on perspectives, allyship, activism, access, and policy. The three Coaching Cards are:

  1. Walking With Our Identities
  2. Finding Your Power
  3. Bring It Home

These activities are a sample of the full Switch the Pitch program Which includes more on the field activities, coach training and organizational coaching that can be adapted to local contexts.

HOW AND WHEN IT CAN HELP

  • For coaches wanting structured modules to bring conversations about equity and identity into regular practice or warm-ups.
  • When youth teams are ready to engage in deeper dialogues about race, inclusion, and equity.
  • In programs seeking to build belonging, leadership, and critical thinking among players, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.
  • Useful for schools, clubs, or community groups launching inclusive coaching practices or anti-racist initiatives.
  • When planning out a season with space for both athletic development and social-emotional lessons.

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THIS RESOURCE

We like that these activities combine play and reflection in ways that feel authentic to soccer practices: the team challenges are experiential and invite players to see themselves and others differently. We also love that Switch the Pitch was developed as a collaborative initiative across the Soccer for Good ecosystem and has been implemented by various professional teams in different leagues.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THIS RESOURCE

  • How ready are your coaches and players to talk about race, identity, and power in your local context? What supports might be needed to create safe space?
  • Which modules or challenges resonate most with the experiences of your players?
  • How can you embed these activities without making them feel like a side event—so they’re part of regular practice and culture, not extra work?
  • Who from your community (coaches, parents, older players) could help lead or facilitate these conversations authentically?
  • What language, culture, or socio-economic factors might shape how players respond, and how could you adapt content accordingly?
  • How will you track change—not just in awareness, but in behavior, inclusion, team culture?
