Nov. 1: USA 1-3 JAPAN (GROUP B)

The USA had an early chance against the Asian Champions when Alessandro Canale set up Nico Perea near the goal, however Perea was caught off-footed and the half-attempted chip off his knee floated over the goal. Japan countered immediately with Masanori Okuyama hitting a thunder bike from 15 yards out to open the scoring. Fred Dilbert leveled for the USA with a skipping shot through a defender’s legs that bounced past the ‘keeper. Japan reclaimed the lead on a quick corner from Takaaki Oba to Okuyama who headed it past Chris Toth at the near post. Oba then added his own on a well-worked play as he headed in goalkeeper Yusuke Kawai’s long pass at the far post. The USA had a flurry of shots to open the 3rd period but Kawai was up to the task.

NOV 2: USA 4-6 IRAN (GROUP B)

The USA twice came from behind to take leads in the game, but the experienced Iranian side would not be denied. Iran took a 1-0 lead into the second on a breakaway goal by Masoumizadeh. USA goalkeeper Chris Toth leveled with a strong volley, and Nico Perea gave the USA the lead with a tap in after Chris Albsiton’s header was saved. Iran countered with a free kick from Masoumizadeh and volley from backup goalkeeper Seyedmahdi Mirjalili to close the period. Albiston and Alessandro Canale reclaimed the USA lead early in the third, but Saeid Piramoun scored a thunder volley off the restart to tie it, and Mohammad Mokhtari was opportunistic at the backpost as a blocked shot fell in his path for the easy header. Playing its fifth game in six days, the USA could not overcome the disciplined Japan side. Ozu put the Asian side ahead early with a shot that was blocked by William Lobato but deflected over the reach of goalkeeper Chris Toth. After a questionable missed call on a Gabe Silveira bike attempt in the second, Japan’s Takaaki Oba hit his own bike to double the lead. Naoya Matsuo stretched the lead in the final seconds of the second with a header, and Shusei Yamauchi added a fourth with a bouncing shot over Toth in the third.
