USWNT REWIND: Heath Bags Breathtaking Brace Heading Into Holiday Hiatus

After being named to the FIFA FIFPro Women’s World11 earlier in the week, U.S. Women’s National Team forward Tobin Heath continued her strong run of form, scoring twice in Manchester United’s 6-1 victory over Bristol City on Sunday to close out the FA Women’s Super League weekend. Heath – who was named the WSL Player of the Month for November – entered the match with two goals in her first seven league matches with Man United but doubled that output in a four-minute span on Sunday afternoon.

Her first goal came in the 83rd minute after she pounced on an errant pass by the Bristol City defense and buried a left-footed, first-time curling drive into the upper 90 from far outside the penalty area.

Three minutes later, Heath struck once again, collecting a pass inside the penalty area, beating her defender with a cheeky nutmeg and then rifling home a right-footed finish.

Along with her two goals, Heath played the full 90 minutes and created five chances in the victory, which kept Manchester United’s unbeaten league record intact and extended its lead atop the table to four points. Christen Press did not see action but was available for Man United following her return from non-COVID illness.

Manchester United’s game against Bristol City was the only match featuring USWNT players to be played over the weekend, as both Tottenham Hotspur (COVID-related) and Manchester City (unplayable field) saw their games postponed.

Manchester City did see action midweek, defeating Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC 3-0 in the second leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 32. Samantha Mewis – who was recently voted the
2020 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year – started the match and played 73 minutes in the victory. Mewis scored the game-winning goal in Man City’s 2-1 win in the first leg on Dec. 9 in Sweden, marking the third different competition she’s scored in for City in 2020. The draw for the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16 will be held on February 16, with Round of 16 games beginning in early March.

The Women’s Super League resumes play the weekend of Jan. 9-10 following a break for the holidays.
